Frank Buckles, The Last WWI Doughboy

Today's Artober drawing is of Frank Buckles. I found his portrait in an article in this month's Smithsonian magazine. He is 107 years old and the last surviving doughboy from World War I.

If he saw this picture of himself he might just like it because I didn't quite capture his whole 107 years. He's a pretty amazing fellow though. He drove a car until he was 102. You can watch a short video of him here on YouTube.

During WWII he was captured by the Japanese in 1942, while working in a civilian capacity in the Philippines. He spend the remainder of that war as a prisoner.

After the war, he returned to the United States, got married and bought a farm in West Virginia where he still lives.
