What Child Is This?

Today I decided that it was about time for me to get my Christmas spirit going on. While working, I listened to Christmas music and drew. I drew the Madonna and Child. My inspiration was the Virgin and Child with the Young John the Baptist by Sandro Botticelli stamp.

At first I drew a quasi-copy of the stamp. You can see where I used the white-out snail to erase lines I didn't like.

With my next attempt, I tried to simplify the mother and child design.

On the left side of today's calendar entry you can see my third attempt to reduce the lines further. And on the right side I tried a new approach to the same topic.

Speaking of my calendar.....I've filled quite a lot of pages with doodles now.

Usually, I am the person who puts up and decorated the office tree. This year I just didn't want to do it. So I folded 6 strips of paper with one of two messages on each: 1. you get to play or 2. you don't get to play this time. I put them in a cup and everyone picked a slip. Turns out the lucky winners were our two newest employees. They were good sports and did a great job, although I would be willing to bet they haven't put decorations on a tree in many years. The best part was I didn't have to do it.

This tree in our parking lot looks like it is in the Christmas spirit with its bright red leaves, doesn't it?
It was so pretty, I had to stop and take a picture.

What have you been doing to get in the mood for the Holidays?

  3. Oh, I like this new green on your blog. You have such a wonderful artistic eye. Your drawings are great!

I hate to be a Grinch but sorry to say, I'm not much of a Christmas person anymore. I used to LOVE Christmas! Not anymore. I quit 'feeling the spirit' about 1990 or so. I put a tree up for the first time since then this year, and I'm done with decorating! The merchants putting out Xmas things *before* Halloween now has just turned me off. I also quit buying gifts (except for very small children). ♥ ∞

  4. Ooooo-la-la! Love the new header... and the doodles. Stamp inspiration is so fun.

Christmas spirit... we haven't really decorated yet but we're doing one special thing a day to prepare. Yesterday I dug our Christmas children's books out of the attic for the boys, the day before that we hung out wreath. This weekend we'll get a tree.

  5. I so enjoy your calendar doodles! And the new guys did a great job with the tree! I've been busy decorating our church and making all those gift baskets and yet the fall wreath still hangs on my own door! ha! Maybe this weekend I'll get to my own stuff.....

  6. I love when you do a show and tell of what is going on in your day! Your drawings are just beautiful! So far at my house, I have made bookmarks of a poem I wrote to enclose in Christmas cards as I do each year and the Christmas tree is sitting in a box in the middle of the sitting room. Think I'll put wreaths on my door today! Speaking of What Child is This, Sarah McLachlan has a beautiful rendition on her Wintersong CD - It's playing now on my computer.

  11. Hi Stevie well your blog looks like it is in the Christmas Spirit. What is it about this year that we seem to be having a hard time getting the spirit. I better start playing Christmas music.

  15. To get in the holiday spirit, I went to church to see a play about the shepherds. It was moving, and wonderful, and I feel like Christmas. I was not supposed to go into crowds, but I went anyways, and I am glad.
