I Collect, Therefore I Am

All of my life I have fallen in and out of collect with stuff. Recently, I have been going through 20 years of collected things in order to de-clutter my closets, attic and pantry. I have packed away some past collections for sale, but some are here to stay.

I started collecting alarm clocks from the 30s and 40s and earlier a few years ago.

I love the patterns the refracted light creates when sunlight passes through my cobalt glass collection.

I am also attracted to prisms and crystal glassware and crystal decanter tops and paperweights.

I collect miniatures of famous landmarks. Those of you not familiar with our fair city might wonder who that half clothed man is. His name is Vulcan and he is the blacksmith god of fire who stands atop a local mountain. Lucky for you he is facing forward in these pictures since his backside is a full moon.

I also am attracted to pottery from the 30s and 40s (and later too) : flowerpots, mixing bowls, Fiestaware, pitchers and teapots.

I have a collection of Woodys from Toy Story.

BUT MOST OF ALL, I love Little Golden Books! I have a huge collection. They are stashed on bookshelves, in dresser drawers and in closets.

Because these pictures only represent a small amount of this stuff, my biggest problem is how to use all of this stuff so that it doesn't just look like clutter and not the treasure that it is to me. I want my home to be artful, not junky. Most of the time I think I have achieved that.

If you find stuff calling your name, if you have closets, shelves and drawers devoted to stuff, if your motto is I collect, therefore I am, please send me a link to see your addictions. Help me out, kindred spirits make yourselves known!

And new collectors beware! There are challenges ahead for you!

  1. Love it! Of course you know this addition is deep within me as well. I think right know you can best see it with in the form of Stockpiling.

  2. A woman after my own heart. I have many collections and they drive my husband crazy. My favorite is my Red Wing Town and Country dinnerware designed by Eva Zeisel. Although I find myself debating whether or not to pack it away until the kids are a little older. Two other comments: 1) My son would faint over your Woody collection. It's his favorite movie character. 2) By any chance do you have a Golden Book in your little collection about a girl with a curl? I'm trying to find the name so I can locate a used copy but all I remember is the line "when she was good she was very good, but when she was bad she was horrid"?

OK, that's the longest comment I've ever left on a blog. Obviously you touched on something.

  3. Hi Anna, Thanks for visiting! I just looked up your Red Wing dinnerware. It is lovely. What a treasure!

I don't have the Little Golden Book you remember. I do know the poem.

The first lines of a children’s poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

    There was a little girl
    Who had a little curl
    Right in the middle of her forehead;
    And when she was good
    She was very, very good,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

I don't know if there is more to the poem or not.

Rachel, yep beware of your compulsions!!!! haha, I know them well.

  5. You have some beautiful collections. Thanks for stopping by my blog, I am so glad you did. I've been poking around yours for a bit, how fun. The pictures you drew on top of those floral cards are beautiful. You got me thinking all night about mixed media, things I could combine to make something pretty, or cool, or even weird.
I am a bit of a crazy collector myself. Lately the husband and I have been buying all the paperback editions of The Lord of the Rings books we can find, from old to new. We can't afford old hard covers so we thought this would be a way to have some cool things for cheap. I also collect little statues of Vespa scooters. It makes me feel good to look at them, remember times I got them and the things I was dreaming about at the time. Thanks for this post, although now I am thinking of all the stuff I want and what to do with what I have. Have a great night. Love Stacy

  6. Stacy, if you have any thrift stores nearby you might find old hardcover books there that are in your price range. That is where I found the majority of my books. If you are ever in Tennessee, there is a wonderful used bookstore there named McKays. There is one in Chattanooga and one in Knoxville. It is about 2 and a half hours from here but I've been a couple of times. You can take your old books and they will give you in store credit. You can find anything there.

I would love to see a picture of your Vespa scooters. That sounds like a fun collection.

  7. Beth,
What kind of old and useful books would be in your collection?

  8. Oh, you know...all the cool old books(I love kids' books from the 50's and earlier, whether it's the original or a republication) I've been finding at the thrift store, and school books of course, especially ones that work with teaching history classically.

I'm glad you stopped by and I look forward to your comments. As Dr. Fraser Crane would say, "Hello, I'm listening."
