I've been wondering...why do some people back into a parking space instead of driving straight in? Is it in order to make a fast get-away? Or could it be because the driver is trying to avoid the repo man by attempting to hide the license plate?
If you are a back-er-up-er, please tell me why. If you understand this phenomenon, please satisfy my curiosity and fill me in on the reason. I need to know.
I'm terrible at backing up Stevie, so that would not be me! lol
ReplyDeleteAh, I am indeed curious what people will say as I have been wondering exactly the same! Furthermore, often people that back in do it poorly taking up two spaces instead of one.;)

I am NOT a backer-inner, but some people do that, esp. old people in big cars, because they are afraid to back out of the parking lot into traffic when they are done shopping. With some big cars, the driver cannot really see whether a car is coming or nor until he has already begun to back out of the parking lot.
ReplyDeleteSummation: they are afraid to have an accident that would be their fault because they can't see.
I think it is because they can and these drivers are just show offs!!! Really, probably because it is hard to back out in parking lots. I drive a car and it is difficult for me to see over suvs, trucks and vans.

Maybe some need to unload what's in the trunk or tail gate needs to be reachable to load into ...
ReplyDeleteI think its safer to back in, so when you pull out you can actually SEE what's in front of you rather than looking over your shoulder and hoping you can back out and not hit or get hit by someone driving by who isnt looking out for cars backing out ....
they don't back in...they usually are there before anyone else and just pull in from the wrong direction or see a spot open up, but once again from the direction and just pull in....
ReplyDeleteat least that's what I'm guilty of if everyone else is facing the other way....
backing in takes too much time unless you need your vehicle for a get-a-way car :)
I dated a fireman years ago and learned it out of habit as they would back in the rigs. Sometimes for me it just depends on the parking lot.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea.. I just came by to see the answers. Daryl's sure makes sense to me.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, but I've accused my poor husband of doing it to make me carsick. He often backs in, but I've never been able to ascertain why. The vintage cars we drive do not require car payments after the first one, and he doesn't shoplift, so I don't think he's avoiding repo or needing a fast getaway. He's been doing it less lately, hallelujah!
ReplyDeleteIt is actually MUCH safer to back in when the parking is diagonal, because when you pull out you can see oncoming traffic. Some places specify back-in parking only, particularly if there is a bike lane adjacent to the parking. It is also much safer for people who load and unload things from the trunk. There are really only two drawbacks to back-in diagonal parking: 1.)some people don't know how to back in with any accuracy, and 2.) when cars start up or if they're sitting idling, they are spewing fumes right onto the sidewalk.(sorry, I'm a transportation nerd)
