Traverse With Caution

Bang, bam, thump, thud, crack, pound, boom, crash, thwack, smack, pop, smash, wham, bump, wallop, bash, and thunder; these are sounds I will hear for the next couple of months. These big noises are produced by little acorns and larger hickory nuts hitting my roof on their way to the ground. The acorns fall onto the back deck and the hickory nuts land on my front porch and litter the driveway.

They form an obstacle course of slips and falls if accidentally stepped on (especially for my less than surefooted self) into and out of my house. When paired with the aforementioned slimy steps and some wet leaves, an autumn trip to see me is an act of bravery. Perhaps I should post a Visitors Beware sign down by the mailbox.

  1. Forewarning your friends sounds like a good thing!! I can imagine that you could take quite a tumble slipping on these...take care! We don't want you blogging in traction!

  2. They are beautiful, even though they got to be a bit of trouble. It reminds me of the time in the spring when my hedge looses its flowers; they white petals are lying in heaps everywhere and when it rains all the walkways get slippery.
Maybe you can paint/draw the acorns?

  4. They are lively things. Hopefully the squirrels will come and help you clean up.

  5. Hey Stevie, I read where the people in New England are having havoc with acorns this year! When I live in Tennessee, I had Black Walnut trees and it was dangerous to walk for sure in the fall! xoxo

  9. Someone parked their car along the street in front of our house. We were amazed to hear the horrible clacking and thunking these nuts were making as they landed on the car every time the wind blew. When we left, we stopped to look at the car. It was covered with little dents.

  11. I have to be careful where I park my car when I go to the park as the trees are dropping them by the bucket full! The squirrels are very happy :-)

  12. Funny! Or, maybe NOT so funny.
Yes a sign is in order...watch your step and do NOT look up...or you will be thunked!

  13. it's like that "ive got good news and bad news" thing. the good news -- you have these lovely nuts making cute pings and then patiently laying there for their portraits to be taken. the bad news -- insurance claims and law suits. hee hee

  15. Now I am really worried about your safety:0...

I've heard a saying that states if there a a lot of acorns it means it will be a cold winter...hope that's not true:)
