Fresh Air

On the way to Rachel's house yesterday, I heard the best Fresh Air piece on NPR that I've heard in a while...."When Hollywood had a Song in its Heart." The host, Terry Gross, interviewed the author of The Songs of Hollywood, Philip Furia. As part of the interview bits of the music are played and the author tells behind the scenes details and antidotes.

Do yourself a favor. Download the podcast and listen to it sometime this week.

In the meantime, tell me some of your favorite movie music moments and musicals. Two of my favorite musicals, as long time readers of this blog will know, are Moulin Rouge and Fiddler on the Roof. I love all of the old standards that were used in Sleepless in Seattle. Some other faves include, Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's, Wind Beneath My Wings from Beaches, Simon and Garfunkel's Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate, Frank Sinatra's New York, New York from On The Town and the soundtrack from Garden State is a personal favorite....your turn now.

  1. I love Holly singing Moon River. Audrey had such a sweet voice. It's too bad the producers felt her singing had to be dubbed in My Fair Lady.

I have too many favorites to list, but here's one that's kind of an oddball choice, Fred Astaire singing "They Can't Take That Away From Me" to Ginger Rogers in Shall We Dance. Love their movies.

  5. I have to pick "As Time Goes By" seeing as Casablanca is my all time favorite movie.
My local cinema shows all the latest Bollywood movies and they are nearly always musicals, or at least a movie with any excuse for a song & dance routine. Very enjoyable!

  8. Moon River is one of my all time faves. A few others that pop into my head right now are "People Will Say We're in Love" from Oklahoma, "Almost Like Being in Love" from Brigadoon, "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific and "Cheek to Cheek" from Top Hat. I'm a sucker for musicals.

  11. My favorite all time movie is Breakfast at Tiffany's and my favorite song is Moon River. Audrey has such a quiet simple delivery and it has stayed with me since I saw it in the movies.

  12. Great post as always Stevie.;) I so agree with you on Moon River, ah that brings shivers down my spine at all times. I constantly listen to a German radio station, called "Classik Radio", which plays not just classical music but also the old classics from cinematography.
My favorite musical is *Hello Dolly*, as I have very fond memories tied to it.;))
As for the soundtrack, I guess *The Good, The Bad and The Ugly* main theme (Ennio Morricone) is one of my favorites.;)
    Have a great Thursday,
    xoxo

I'm glad you stopped by and I look forward to your comments. As Dr. Fraser Crane would say, "Hello, I'm listening."
