Blue Tablecloth Week: Day Four

I'm just gonna lay it all out on the table....I have a potential problem. I have a favorite brand of ballpoint pen. I love this pen. I love to write with this pen. I love to draw with this pen. I just went shopping for more of these pens. When I got ready to write this post, I gathered up all of this brand of pen in the house. I have more than a few.

But, I have a problem.

Pentel might be discontinuing production of my favorite ballpoint pen. At the very least, stores hardly stock them anymore. Everyone wants the gel pen or the roller ball. Not me. I want the Pentel R.S.V.P. ballpoint pen. It's ink glides on smoothly rarely depositing glops of ink on the paper. It doesn't smear. It's fine point draws a fine line. I know it's probably not archival ink, but my sketches aren't archival quality either.

Speaking of archival and quality, my Moleskine is filled with mostly blank pages. And I've carried it in my purse for over a year now. The paper in it is smooth to the touch. The little notebook is so nice...I can't make myself put Pentel to paper. I might mess it up. This is stupid I know. But there you have it.

The truth is I am much more likely to draw on my worksheets at work than I am on my nice Moleskine.

I have more than one very nice hard bound watercolor tablet. I even have a small Moleskine watercolor notebook. Have I made more than one or two watercolors in them? No, instead I use highlighters and magic markers and Sharpies to make pseudo paintings.

I really planned to paint my Valentine tulips. Instead, I did this.

It's like Rachel and her love of Lisa Frank products all over again. She had stickers, pads pencils...she had tons of product. She loved it. She still had tons of product...when she cleaned out her room before she got married. Tons of Lisa Frank products that she had never used because they were too nice.

I've instructed Rachel not to throw my (unused) paper products away when I die. Someone will use them. If you've drawn and painted and used your Moleskines up and need more, send me your name and I'll put you in my will.

  1. Wow, look at all those pens! It is nice that someone else to stocks on things. I have a similar issue with makeup.;) They are all yours right? Only one colour too.;)
I completely LOVE the drawing above the flowes. It brings to mind the time of Jane Austen characters, even though I would think these ladies are suppose to belong in the 20s.;)

  2. Oh do yourself and others a big favour and use them. Why are you saving them for somebody else to enjoy when you could be creating wonderful sketches for everyone to enjoy instead?

  3. Hilary, I use the pens, just not the notebooks. I had no idea I had so many around the house. It was a surprise to me to find 24 pens tucked in drawers and in my purse.

  4. Heck, use them up girl. At least tear off your work sheet drawings and paste them into your moley. That moleskine is probably having self worth issues worse than your own since you won't use it. Just think of it this way...it is better than buying yourself a box of chocolates that realllllly make you feel guilty and not near as fattening. :) I love your sketches where ever you make them. I know how you feel about your pentel. I love the Pilot precise extra fine and they have done something to "improve" it. UGH...

  5. I can never find a pen in my house - or at least one that works!!! They look like fab pens and your sketches are real quality. Love your moleskin pad too.

  6. I know exactly how you feel. Good art materials, especially pens, are so hard to find. And if they say that the one you looked so hard for is about to be phased out, trouble arises. Drawing with inks require the perfect pen that could clearly capture your images without messing them up.

  7. I am so in good company here .. I have blank canvases sitting for years because I couldnt bring myself to 'mark' them .. I have a packet of Color(cant think of the whole name) paper since high school .. dont ask .. I couldnt bring myself to cut into them for collage purposes .. anyway ... I thought I was the only one who felt this way .. I am so glad to not be alone ...

  8. My Man would completely agree with your choice of pen! Me, on the other hand, prefers a BOLD tip pen... 1.6m is my favorite!

As usual, I lurve your drawings no matter what paper source you use. It's still your artistic masterpieces!

  9. Man, I love those Pentel R.S.V.P. pens. That's all I would use at work when I got to do the ordering.
    P.S. Use the moleskins.
