Rust on the Roof

I have an affinity for ramshackle buildings and rusty roofs.

Maybe because I feel kind of broken down myself some days.

I'm not as snappy as I used to be.

I might need to trim down, cut back, clean up the rough edges.

But all the same, there's something comfortable and appealing about ramshackle too. I think aging can be quite beautiful if you know what to look for. May we all remember to look past rust and ruin for beauty today.

  1. You have said a lot with very few words. I love old buildings. Layers of paint, shutters that are just a bit twisted and not so perfect picket fences. Take care.
I will look for the holiday special on HGTV.

  2. I tend to agree with you. Behind the imperfections, there is often something truly beautiful if we just take the time to look.

  3. What a beautiful post. So poignant and with a deeper meaning, just in a few words.
A man once told me that to him a woman is beautiful with age, because in the lines of her face one can see that she has lived.

  4. I agree with that sentiment totally. I love paintwork that is a little bit peely and showing some imperfections - either completely authentic or 'aged' which all the same has character and charm. You always manage to seek out these wonderful scenes and as ever your words have hidden depths. Love them!

  9. Betsy saw the same thing I did.... the dish! Lol. Perhaps there is more going on inside that ol' rusted shack. Now that makes think of the Love Shack song by the B-52's. Lol

  10. Betsy and ChaChaneen I noticed the dish as well. When we first moved out to the area, the building housed a little store. The area has always been rural but over the years the city has moved out to meet it. When a new grocery store was built close by and people no longer had to drive 20 minutes for milk and bread Caine's Grocery closed. Soon afterward a small engine repair shop opened there. I guess the owner likes to watch TV while he works.

  12. Ok, is it sad that I recognized what place that was after only looking at the first picture. I guess that is what living in the same place for well over a decade will do to you.

I did not know that it had convince items in it before the small engine store. The things you miss when you are five.

Love your analog. I think people who truly LOVE each other look past the rust and see the beauty. It's not really that they don't see the rust. It's just that the rust doesn't matter. It's what's under the rust that counts.

  13. I'm not feeling that "snappy" these days myself, so I know what you mean, but to every age there is a season. As long as we have good health, and can still be intrigued by the world, then it's all good, rust and all.

  14. Awww, I love this! I find that things with a bit (or a LOT) of history are so much MORE interesting than the new, shiny glitzy sort!

  16. i have a love affair with rusty old things going as well. maybe it's a soul mate thing. i was just thinking on my way home from work today how old i've been feeling. i'm not as quick and on top of things at work. i tire easily and have less patience than i want with the demanding people deadlines at work. maybe vacation was just too good to me. i hope this passes. i need to work for many more years before retirement. big sigh!

also i wanted to say that i thought of you as we drove thru alabama and imagined how cool it would be if we could have met up for a cup of coffee. maybe next time!

  21. Sometimes a rustic old shack can hold a kind of beauty of its own and this obviously did.
