Saturday Afternoon at the Cinema

Way back when I saw the 1969 version of True Grit and today I saw the 2010 version.  As beloved as John Wayne was and still is as a larger than life movie star, my vote goes to Jeff Bridges for his crusty rendition of that washed up codger of a US Marshall, Rooster Cogburn.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Hailee Steinfeld  on the big screen. She gave an outstanding performance as Mattie Ross.  As usual, Matt Damon gives a spot on performance as Texas Ranger LaBoeuf.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and give it a resounding 4 1/2 (out of 5) thumbs up.

How about you?  Got an opinion?  Are you a lover of westerns like me and wish the genre would make a come-back?

  1. I saw this last night too...thought it was so realistic with the rough unkempt shaggy hair look of the men and the brutal shootings and hangings portrayed as common happenings seemed so...come what may. Jeff Bridges was perfect as Cogburn. Loved how Hailee Steinfeld spoke!

  3. I'm looking forward to seeing this! You know I'm from the real Fort Smith and even though this is a fictional story there are some real life ones that totally compare to this. It was the wild West back in the day:)

  7. I haven't seen it yet, however I rarely go to the theater anymore because of the expense now that we have Netflix. Although, in a RARE treat ~ today I'm actually going with my MIL to see 'The Kings Speech'! Yea!

  8. I am not familiar with the movie you mention here, but I have grown up with old westerns as for some reason, they were the only American movies send behind the Iron Curtain. Those and "spaghetti westerns" of course - whatever ones think of them, I still enjoy seeing Clint Eastwood in "The good, the bad and the ugly".;)

  12. I agree with you 100 percent. I saw the movie Saturday as well and loved it! Jeff Bridges nailed it and Matt Damon proved once again that he can't be put in a box. I miss the days of the westerns and do wish they would make a comeback. Wouldn't it be cool if we saw a remake of "High Plains Drifter" or any of Clint Eastwood's movies? Hmmm...who could take over Eastwood's roles?

  13. David and I saw this right after Christmas and we loved it! I was worried, because D has always loved the original with John Wayne, but even he said it was better.

Matt Damon was so good he was barely recognizable. And I can't say enough superlatives about Hailee Steinfeld. Look out for her...she will do BIG things. Jeff Bridges became Rooster Cogburn, much more that The Duke could ever have thought of. I will be ranking this one right up there, really close anyway, with 'Lonesome Dove', the best western ever made.

I love westerns. Speaking of Matt Damon, have you seen him in 'All the Pretty Horses'? Outstanding movie.
