Labor Day Weekend Coming Up!

Has the start of school always made children this overjoyed?

I have some class pictures that look just like this.

Besides new shoes and school supplies, what do you remember about the start of school each year? I remember the first grade teacher, Mrs. DeShazo, who demanded that we color in the pictures as hard as we could and there better not be any flicks of crayon sticking up on the paper anywhere. (I think she must have had a serious problem)

I remember Danny Gibbs in the second grade. He like to pretend to El Kabong me....anybody but me remember the Quick Draw MrGraw cartoons?

I forget third grade.

Fourth found me in Mrs. Down's class. She was fairly nice. Nothing amiss to report about her. My best class picture EVER was taken when I was in the fourth.

In fifth grade I got my first up close and personal taste of mortality. A boy everyone liked died in a car wreck that year.

In the sixth grade I had my first male teacher, Mr Sheetz. I drew caricatures of him and we passed them around the room. I never got caught. I drew him about a month ago, just to see if I still could.

In seventh grade, my girlfriend and I became fans of the original Star Trek television show. We even wrote our own episode of the show...Mr. Spock falls in love.

In the eight grade, I was finally one of the seniors in our elementary school. I had been looking up to them for seven years. It was about time.

  1. Wow, I am so impressed by your memory! I can not remember much from the first years of school. This mostly due to the fact that in the first 3 years, I changed school 4 times, as my parents moved all across the country. I mostly recall the fear of starting yet another new class.;))

  3. I love the old photograph...not the somber faces but the spiffy clothes and pigtails.

  4. I love the photo...those perfectly pressed and starched pinafores and collars! Very cute. That teacher looks like she'd have rules about flecks of crayons, too! LOL!

I remember getting a swat on the bottom when I would write my 'nines' the 'wrong way'. I had to write 100 correct 'nines' on the blackboard. I think that was kindergarten.

  8. I haven't thought of Quick Draw in years...I remember watching all the old cartoons in the afternoon with Marg Payne....I wish I could remember the name of that show.

I had a brush with death in the 5th grade too as a friend of mine died with leukemia. Chilling isn't it?

  9. I love this old photo!...A couple of those boys do seem to be crying don't they?...maybe they were just in a fight:)

I remember my elementary school and all my teachers vividly..My first grade teacher, Mrs. Smith, was mean to those she didn't like and would put the "bad boys" under her desk!...

  15. I love that photo! Imagine such a large class size by today's classroom standards?

I went to a strict religious elementary school and I remember each and every year as if it were yesterday. The education I received was superb, but the discipline, unfortunately, is not a happy memeory. A lot of times my head was hit against the blackboard when I did not do my math sum correctly. My high school years were much nicer! :-)

  16. Whoa, I'm impressed! I DO NOT remember all my grades. I remember only a few grades and the details are sketchy. It was fun to read yours though. ha ha That's because you're fun!
