What I Used To Do

Way back in the nineties I used to have a craft business.  I sold my work at a big craft show twice a year, as well as maintained two mini mall booths year round.  Because most of my work was small and to save on costs, I had a partner. We both did our own work, but our styles and focus blended really well.

One of my favorite things to paint were children's table and chair sets. I had the best woodman...who was also super affordable, which made painting them cost effective.  Well, that is cost effective for someone who basically worked for $2 per hour.  Let me tell you folks, crafting has got to be a business you love, not one you plan to come a millionaire from.

Anywho...thought I would share a few photos of those table and chair sets.

This one was a commission. The mom wanted it to match her daughter's room and to feature the Bible verse.

I saw the Moon and the Moon saw Me.
God bless the Moon and God bless Me.

Mary, Mary quite contrary. How does your garden grow?

This set was done to match all the fabric in two little girl's room.

This piece was a chair only, but I always thought a table to match would have been just right.

This set is my all time favorite. It has the words of Old McDonald painted around the edge of the table.

I've always regretted selling this one. I would paint another for my grandkids, but the old guy that made them hasn't been in the business for years. Besides that a nice set like this unfinished would cost a lot more than the $40 he used to charge. It would probably cost more than what I used to sell them for.

I made a couple more sets, a Noah's Ark and some tables with ribbons and flowers, but I guess I forgot to take photos of them. I tried to take pictures of most of the major things I made because I was afraid I wouldn't remember how to paint it if I wanted to do it again.

I painted walls too. I'll show you those photos another day  if you like.

Cleaning the house today to get ready for the baby shower Sunday. Baby is due a week from Saturday. It won't be long now!

  6. So glad you posted these!! Absolutely would love to see what you've done with walls, Steph. Loved the children's furniture, and I agree, the last one just has a certain something to it - can't put my finger on it; maybe the colors, maybe the design, but it's incredibly unique. I think my salary pretty much matched yours. Unless you've done it, you have no idea how much work goes into it. You're right-you have to love it and forget about the money. Have you ever done trompe l'oiel?

  9. Get yourself some plans and a jigsaw. Make your own tables and chairs, Stevie. You'd be making them for a lot less than the $40, and then painting them. Christmas is coming, and you'd make good money, I'd warrant.

  10. These are great Stevie. I wonder if you could find someone at a Senior Citizens Center that would make you an unfinished set like this for a reasonable price. Wow you are good girl.

  11. Ah they are CHARMING! Such fun to look at the photos...I have to say though, that I did a double-take when I read "way back in the nineties" as I am thinking that was just a short time ago!

  12. These are quite amazing! And will be family heirlooms for those you made them for. I love the photoshopped photo of your girls! I'll have to check that feature out and see what I can do with the little sailor picture I featured today.

  14. Great table and chair sets! I used to paint picnic tables in a similar fashion..but yours are MUCH better! It was very therapeutic though. Just heard a book review for "Crafts for Poor People" which made me laugh. As the interviewer said, " Do really rich people do crafts?"

  16. Steviewren, you have a tremendous artistic talent. It is sad that a living can't be made of it. I understand - $2/hour! Give up! Have you tried painting wall-hanging pictures, for adults or children? Would they sell for more? - Dave

  17. ok going back to some of your older posts. After seeing these start thinking how you can utilize your talents here. Have you thought about starting up a business again? A little gift shop? A unique shop with your art and decor finds? Just thinking out loud here. :)

  19. Hi there! I saw you stopped by my little place, so I thought I'd see what you had to say... your painting is really beautiful and I, too, like the red table and chair set the best! Perhaps you could find an old children's table and chair set at a yard sale and paint it in a similar fashion for your grandchildren... what a lovely heirloom to create for them! You are one talented painter! I hope you'll stop by again and say hi! All my best,
    Kathy McCreedy
