Okay....I'm a Dope!

I wanted to show you what I saw earlier this week, so I stopped on my way home to shoot this video. My subjects were there just as I thought they would be. You'll notice that it is shot holding the camera the wrong way.....ONCE AGAIN! I make this mistake all the time. You think I would learn. I'm posting it anyway, because I think you might like it even though I'm a dope!

  1. Stevie...I am the dope...are they bats???

  2. Jill, they are. When I watch the video using Windows Media Player they are much easier to see. I don't know if there is a way for you to see it that way or not.

  3. Are you posting this to make me feel better about myself?

  4. We would never have known if you didn't dip down to the street and buildings!

    Yikes...that's a lot of bats!

And I loved your cute southern accent! :)

  5. Okay, the bats were cool, but what I REALLY loved was that deep southern accent!!! And funny, just yesterday I was wondering what your accent might sound like. Mine's a very midwestern Walter Cronkite.

  6. Thanks Betsy and Willow. I listened to myself first to make sure I didn't sound like too much of a hick. One of my grands is always correcting my speech....I call her the speech nazi.

  7. I used to have a mountain cabin and the bats would fly inside and terrorize all the kids.

Side note: I have long been a fan of James Thurber's writings, I had no idea he was so cute. ;-]

  8. Wow, this puts that clip of mine that I posted a month ago or so to shame!! Wonderful! I LOVE bats.;)) Truly "you will not have any mosquitos after this".;))

  9. Wow, what a phenom. I have only seen this many bats (more actually) when in TX. Maybe these bats are migrating?? Are they in this area always? Is there a big bridge near there? In Austin the bats roost under a big bridge.

  10. Lisa, I've watched those bats from the top of the bridge in Austin. That was truly amazing! I wondered if these could be migrating as well. I've lived here 20 + years, seen a few bats most days, but never like this. That is why I speculated that they could have taken up in the empty building in that location. There is a cave at the end of my road as well.

  11. Wow! What a lot of bats! Amazing! I've seen lots of bats, but never so many all at once...

(and you don't sound like a hick...just sweetly southern)

  12. I do this ALL the time too.. no kidding. It's like I turn the camera to get a vertical shot without thinking and that works just fine. I naturally do the same for video. I can rotate them though. I figured out how to do that a while back and if you want me to try, I can probably correct your raw copy of the video. I'll be away from home for a couple of days, so I can help you out on the weekend if you like. :)

The bats are very cool. You must have a fresh crop of mosquitoes or flying ants.

  13. Thanks Hilary, I need all the help I can get in this area!

As to mosquitoes...we always have them.

  14. Homing bats?

I would have done the same, after all 'still' shots work when turned on the side ... silly video thing needs to do the same!

  15. Wow, that's a lot of bats! I wish we had that many here ... 'course, we might. I've never tried to count them. Bats are one of my favorite mammals. :)

  16. Those little guys eat TONS of mosquitos! Thanks for sharing your batty buddies and I won't say a thing about falling out of my chair because I thought I'd gone sideways.

  17. Now I know why I never use the video feature on *my* digital camera! But you aren't a dope! You got who knows how many people who'd been staring at their monitors for hours to do a neck stretch - well, to the left at least. :-) Gorgeous sunset, btw.

  18. One more thing - that many bats, they may've come out of the trees. They did in older residential areas of Las Vegas. Nobody at the BBQ I was at warned me what would happen when the sun went down. Silly me, I thought they were just birds *because they came out of the trees* in every yard on the block!

  19. Very Cool mom. I don't think i would have noticed the camera was the wrong way a first if you hadn't pointed it out. Very cool. Maybe I can check it out some day when I am over at your house.

  20. I can remember floating in a friend's pool in the evening and watching the bats fly home to roost.

  21. Bummer video won't come up on my iPhone so I will check it out tomorrow when I get up (out of bed... Ha ha )

  22. The bats are truely amazing...but it's your wonderful, soft, southern voice that I enjoyed the most....If I ever moved down south I know I would end up with a southern accent within a week!...very addictive!...very lovable!

Whenever I make a movie I always forget and start turning the camera around during the filming:)

I'm glad you stopped by and I look forward to your comments. As Dr. Fraser Crane would say, "Hello, I'm listening."
