In A Strange Mood

Remember when I said I would like to have a collection of doll heads? Well, what do you think? Kind of creepy aren't they?

Since I was a child, the thought that toys might have secret lives of their own has always been a fantasy of mine. I loved books about toys coming alive after their owners would go to sleep. They would fill the night with tiny adventures and toy mayhem, but in the morning things would return to normal and the owner would never be the wiser.

Imagine my delight when Pixar made Toy Story. I have seen it a number of times and I still get a kick out of Woody's irritation with Buzz Lightyear's refusal to believe that he is a toy.

Here are some favorite quotes.

Woody (Screaming at Buzz) YOU!! ARE!! A!! TOOYYYYYYY!!!!

Buzz Lightyear
How dare you open a Space Ranger's helmet on an uncharted planet?! My eyeballs could've been sucked from their sockets!

Mr. Potato Head [Mr. Potato Head rearranges his facial features crazily]
Mr. Potato Head
: Hey, Hamm. Look at me, I'm Potasso (while Mr. Potato Head puts his eyes, mouth and nose in a position that reminds a famous Picasso work) Hamm: I don't get it.Mr. Potato Head: You uncultured swine!

Rex "I'm from Mattel. Well, actually I'm from a smaller company that was purchased by Mattel in a leveraged buyout."

Woody is my all time favorite cowboy toy. I have 3 Woody dolls and numerous smaller versions. I even decorate a Christmas tree for my grandkids (really for me) using toys as the ornaments. The majority of the ornaments are Toy Story toys that came with Burger King kids meals. Yep, I ate a lot of burgers and kids fries. And I'm proud of it.

  1. I love it that you thought your toys came to life. I loved dolls and still do. I have the sweetest memories of coming home from school and my mother would have washed my doll dresses and ironed them then lined up my babies on the couch for inspection. Dolls are still very comforting.

  2. I used to be afraid to put my dolls away in the toy box for fear that they might be 'alive' and uncomfortable.

That doll with the cracked head gave me the willies...

  3. I'm much like you Steviewren. When I was a little girl I loved the storybook "The Velveteen Rabbit" because all the toys came alive at night. I always wanted to wake up and find my dolls having a party :)

  4. You are not alone, dear friend. I also am a lover of heads. It's the artist in us, drawn to the unusual faces. In flea markets and antique stores, I go straight for the heads! Loved this post.

My daughter once dated a guy that looked just like Buzz Lightyear!

  6. Haha, Betsy you are like my little sister. She hates them too. In her defense, I did like to torture her with them when we were young though.

Pat, I had a Raggedy Ann book in which the toys came alive.

Debby, some of these dolls creep me out too....but you should see some of the ones I didn't choose for the mosaic....the things sick people do to their dolls....remember that scene in Toy Story where the bully next door has tortured all of his sister's toys...Oh yeah, some of those folks are alive and torturing dollies on Flickr as we speak...

Nanatrish, I love that story about your mother...how sweet she was.

  11. I was so surprised when I popped over to Willows' blog and saw the awesome head...what a great nightlight this would make.

I acquired 10 of the little gems from a dealer friend and wondered what could be done with such strange little stoic faces...then it came to me, what if light shined through their little eye sockets and creepy teeth...'Cracked in the Head' nightlights were born!

We ain't cracked, we is just artistic...right??? Love yer clan too!
